I’ve talked to several “right out of college” people about what they think of the real world. So far, the general consent is:
a) No one tells you how overwhelming everything is out of college.
b) We’ve learned more about life in these last 4 months than we did in a year of college.
c) It’s difficult to decide and implement “life plans” when you don’t have any.
d) Nothing is straightforward, except for your coffee table assembly directions you just put together in your new apartment.
e) It’s hard finding something you like to do among all the stuff you have to do.
I’m sure there are more “epiphanies” that come with the diploma in hand, but I haven’t had my coffee yet, so the only other thing running through my mind is why Will Smith decided to use his real name in “The Fresh Prince of Bell Air.” Which I can’t figure out.
So what does a college graduate do with all of this emotional uncertainty?
Get a hobby!
When your job isn’t specifically your dream job, and you can’t seem to find any well-paying job that would interest you–find a hobby that’s going to keep you mentally sane.
Because what could start as a hobby, could eventually become a career. If you’re any good. And if anyone else thinks you’re good.
So my next step into hobby-happiness will be to write a book.
And perhaps someday it won’t just be a hobby…it’ll be an obsession.

Your points on the feelings right out of college are dead on. I just graduated in May and emotional uncertainty is basically my life story right now. But, a hobby is an awesome way to keep your sense of self while shuffling through entry-level jobs.
