Hi there

I saw you visited my old Liberal Arts grad blog [http://liberalartsgrad.blogspot.com/] so I am paying your blog a visit as well. Lots of great stuff here. Yup I completely agree with your observations on adulthood above. It’s funny because all throughout college I had a hankering to be part of the “Real World.” Now that I’m very much immersed in it I can’t help but sometimes wish for the good old days of being an undergrad!

I never did understand that rush to the alter. If you’re clueless and poor, why would you want to double that?! But what do I know? I have a very full and varied love life with Michael Foucult (dead), Nickolas Sparkes (married), John McPhee (who knows…), as well as Annie Dillard, Joan Didian, others and the New York Times.

Between all of us, who has time to really settle down and commit something/someone other than the insane asylum? (who would want to?) :-p

Uhg! I hate those questions! When I first started coming home from college, I was getting that question all the time—and I hadn’t even graduated yet!

I got to the point I had a standard answer for all these questions: “I go to school out East, I’m a [insert class year], I’m majoring in English, no I don’t want to teach, I want to go to graduate school and later earn my PhD, I want to teach rhetorical theory and composition, in the mean time I’ll starve. Any more questions?”

Like you said, if I were to give them the real answer—that I wanted to read rhetorical theory and write deep philosophical and sociological critiques of different aspects of society, while applying the tools I learned in my rhet. theory classes (aka live under the bridge and be happy)…they would have looked at me like I was crazy.

*sigh* Great post! Only fellow English majors/humanities majors understand…

Really, you should have gone to a more conservative “liberal arts” college. Then you would find out how different the world is and how fucked up they think you are. The best moment was when I was called a Democrat and after I corrected the person that I was a Communist they were horrified. And still they couldn’t get me right even when I told them - I became the Socialist. BASTARDS!

The only condition to this post is if you work at a state funded place you will likely get holidays off. Pay sucks, but you will get holidays off. Oh, and some holiday pay.

In my case, I have two jobs. For one I’m a biologically operated, degree holding, cart pushing, book dispensing robot (aka, I shelve books at my public library). The job I love however, is at the Community Writing Center (think student writing center but for the community) where I am a Writing Coach/Assistant. I get paid to teach workshops on writing and to sit and help people with their writing.

That, in my estimation, is the English Major’s dream job. The pay sucks, but what I’m getting out of it in terms of experience…priceless.

You should blog about that: how low pay high experience jobs will help in end goals towards masters and PhD s, but in the mean time, enjoying living from pay check to pay check on two part time jobs lol.

So really your “working with trashcans…” not that far off.

I stumbled upon your blog today and haven’t stopped reading it since.

As a fellow recent “just this side of starving” graduate with a B.A. in English who works two jobs just so she can keep the English majors dream job she got after college… Your blog was a welcome breath of liberal arts fresh air (or would it be musty and dusty because of all the paper and books?)
